Second tragedy for family of worker killed on estate
Mother collapses after giving baby mouth-to-mouth resuscitation
THE family of a scaffolder electrocuted while working on a council estate has been hit by a second tragedy in six months with the death of his campaigning mother.
Pamela Khizer, 47, was still coming to the terms with the loss of her son, Ralph Kennedy, when she died last Tuesday.
She was determined to get to the truth behind his death and had lobbied Camden Council to make safe all construction sites. Mr Kennedy – known by the childhood nickname ‘Barney’ – died when he touched a live light fitting while working on the Mayford estate in Somers Town in September last year. An inquest will be held next month.
Mrs Khizer collapsed at her home in Eltham, south London. Moments before her death, she had been attempting to save a neighbour’s baby by giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. By the time an ambulance arrived, the baby had recovered but Mrs Khizer had lost consciousness.
June Loughran, her sister-in-law, said: “Her heart just packed up. The sad thing about it was she saved this baby’s life by giving mouth-to-mouth and then collapsed.”
A post-mortem revealed there was no link between her action and her sudden death.
Mrs Khizer, who suffered from emphysema, had seven children, including nine-year-old twin boys. Her oldest child, Elizabeth Kennedy, is likely to take care of four of the youngest. The others are grown up.
Brought up in Fortess Road in Kentish Town by her RAF father, Michael Loughran, and his wife Gladys, Mrs Khizer, one of 10 siblings, attended Eleanor Palmer School in Tufnell Park.
Mrs Loughran said: “Pam would help you even if it meant giving you her last penny.”
Mrs Khizer’s funeral is at St Dominic’s Priory in Southampton Road, Gospel Oak, at 11am on Wednesday.
