£300 parking
fees for July 7 victim's wife
A BEDSIDE vigil for a man who was seriously injured in the
July 7 bombings cost his wife more than £300 in parking
fees.
Janine Mitchell visited her husband Paul at the hospital
and had to continually leave his side to top up meters in the
hospital grounds.
Mr Mitchell was injured in the blast at Kings Cross as
he travelled to work, and he spent two weeks at the Royal Free
being nursed back to health.
Parking fees racked up to £36 a day and Mrs Mitchell
told the BBC it distracted her from looking after her husband.
She said: Instead of concentrating on Paul I had to worry
about finding a parking space. It was something I really did
not need at the time.
I was having to feed the meters horrendous amounts of
money, and having to leave every few hours to go and find a
new parking space.
There were occasions when I was in tears in front of wardens
who told me I could not park where I had just left the car.
She asked security staff if they could find her a parking pass
but was told they were reserved for families of people
in intensive care.
A spokeswoman for the Royal Free Hospital said they were sorry
to hear about Mrs Mitchells experience, but there was
little they could about it.
They said: Our hands are tied. The trust has only 155
parking spaces for the public.
They added they were unable to increase the number because of
planning constraints and access for emergency vehicles. |
