Developers change plans and save historic tunnels
A CRUCIAL part of Camden Town’s industrial heritage has been saved after developers were persuaded to change plans for a new building.
The Horse Tunnels form a web of underground vaults from warehouses running along the Regent’s Canal through the Stables Market.
They were used to move horses with goods from the canal quaysides to depots and railway terminals in the area. But the Town Hall passed plans two months ago that would have seen the horse tunnels sealed forever. Now, under pressure from conservation groups the Camden Railway Heritage Trust and the Greater London Industrial Archaeology Society architects have re-drawn the plans.
Chris Shaw, whose company Shaw Corporation has worked as surveyors for the scheme, said the architects went back to the drawing board once the importance of the tunnels became clear.
He said: “The design has been modified so the public can have access to the tunnels, if this is needed, in the future.
“The plans that were put in before did not appreciate the significance of these features. People with a working knowledge of the area knew these were significant, and once the developers were told, they re-drew their plans.”
He added that in the future the tunnels, which are currently semi-derelict, could be opened to the public.
