Mark Mayne |
Deputy head on awards shortlist
A POPULAR teacher at a West Hampstead school is in the running for a national award after being nominated by two pupils.
Mark Mayne, a deputy head at Hampstead School, in Westbere Road, has been shortlisted in the “outstanding urban leader” category in the Department for Education and Skills Teaching Awards after the pupils and headteacher Jacques Szemalikowski plotted behind his back to enter him.
Mr Mayne, a drama teacher, said: “I was delighted. It’s a privilege even to be nominated.”
He added that if he were to win it would be a reflection on the school and the way staff are allowed to work to their own style and strengths.
Mr Mayne, who studied drama at Manchester University, taught in prisons before moving to Hampstead School 10 years ago.
A panel of three judges will spend the day with him at the school in two weeks’ time to help make their decision, which will be announced in June.
