Heath no place for cyclists• AS a lifelong cyclist and professional transport planner, I never cease to make the case for cycling. Indeed, I believe that to make the roads safe for cycling is the most important single thing that could be done to improve urban transport.
Nevertheless, I am strongly opposed to the idea that there should be any significant increase in provision for cyclists on Hampstead Heath. The Heath should be for the enjoyment of people on foot, who should be able to relax completely when walking there, without having to be on the alert for cyclists.
The Camden Cycling Campaign (CCC) wants cyclists to be able to share more of the Heath’s footpaths. It also wants the Heath to be used as a through route. The CCC’s plans would seriously detract from the Heath’s tranquillity and recreational function.
