Different rates of Gunners’ firepower
Premier League
National Division
Charlton 2, Arsenal 9
Birmingham 0, Arsenal 1
IT was a week of two halves for Arsenal as they cruised past rivals Charlton 9-2 on Thursday, only to narrowly edge it 1-0 over Birmingham on Sunday.
Third in the table Charlton were a comfortable 2-0 up after half an hour against the Gunners at Gravesend on Thursday night.
But Lianne Sanderson and Katie Chapman pulled the north London side back into the game and Kelly Smith fired Arsenal ahead just before the break.
Then came a six goal blitz, with Smith bagging a second, Rachel Yankey and Sian Larkin finding the back of the net and Julie Fleeting scoring a brace.
It was a different story on Sunday when ninth placed Birmingham held the Gunners to a goalless draw right up to the last five minutes.
Wales skipper Jayne Ludlow saved Arsenal’s blushes when she came off the bench to score with her first touch of the game.
Next up for Arsenal are Doncaster Belles, who visit Boreham Wood FC on Sunday. Kick off is at 2pm.

Woking 0, Spurs 1
AN injury hit Spurs sit ninth of 11 teams with three games to go after losing to third in the table Woking on Sunday.
In a scrappy first half the visitors enjoyed plenty of chances as they looked to carve out an early lead.
But any hopes they had of taking something from the game soon vanished when Rosi Webb and Shadine Mars went off injured.
With the game heading for a draw, Woking secured all three points when they netted a late winner. |
