Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 19 April 2007
Why are cells in a state?
• I was interested to read your article (Police cells are ‘mouldy and old’, say inspectors, April 12) about the state of the custody suites at our police stations.
It’s good that the Independent Custody Visitors are raising these concerns.
Clearly, the repairs, maintenance and cleaning contracts are not being effectively ‘policed’ to a decent standard.
My worry is that, several months ago, the dire state of the custody suites was being suggested as a reason for closing local police stations such as Holmes Road (Kentish Town) and Hampstead altogether.
It would be very disturbing for residents if cleaning and maintenance contracts were being deliberately run down in order in order to allow the police to use this argument again.
Who is responsible for managing these contracts so ineptly, and to whom are they accountable? NICK RUSSELL
