Underground storage row
AN underground car park on an estate in Kentish Town is to be leased to a private storage company for half-a-million pounds, to the fury of some residents.
Keepsafe Self-Storage has signed a deal with the Town Hall to use the disused car park on Denton in Malden Crescent.
But campaigner John Murphy says the space should be used for a community hall.
He said: “Our council estates need something that will incorporate the community. We could organise activities, nurseries for children, a night club for the kids and once a month you could have a social evening for the estate.”
Denton Tenants and Residents Association chairwoman Linda Carnell said the council has “not been prepared to cover the costs to bring the space back into use,” and that residents are “at the end of their tether”.
If the plans go ahead a reception area, manned patrols, a monitored CCTV system and a duty manager on call night and day, will serve to police and maintain the estate.
A Camden Council spokesperson said the money raised would “be ploughed back into improving homes”.
Keepsafe managing director Rod Edge added: “By installing security on a day-to-day basis we improve the fabric of the property and also exclude the undesirable element.”
