Prison listeners ready in a crisis
• AT Pentonville there is a team of dedicated listeners, all trained by the Samaritans, who provide 24-hour assistance to any inmate at the prison (‘Suicide man‘s buzzer off, March 29).
We offer emotional support and at all times confidentiality.
The aim of the listener is to be available at any time of the day or night to befriend those passing through personal crises and in imminent danger of self-harming or taking their own lives.
Listeners receive no extra privileges and do it on a purely voluntary basis to help people in crisis.
We are supported by the Samaritans, who visit the prison every two weeks.
If any readers would like more information or think they can help, by either visiting or writing to a prisoner, they can write to me at B Wing, HMP Pentonville, Caledonian Road, London N7 8TT, preferably enclosing a stamped addressed envelope. JOHN HUGHES
