Dramatic 2-1 victory sees the dots win our challenge cup

STRIKER Jon Dowsett fulfilled his boyhood dream of scoring the winning goal in a cup final on Sunday as Reddot carved out a dramatic 2-1 victory over rivals Globetown to lift our Camden New Journal Challenge Cup.
With temperatures soaring at Wingate and Finchley’s Abrahams Stadium, the Dots got off to an explosive start as they scored within minutes of the kick-off to leave cup holders Globetown chasing the game.
Alexie Nicolaou broke clear of the Globes’ defence only to be brought down by goalkeeper Paul Donovan. Saving the shot stopper from a possible red card, the powerful forward quickly got to his feet before passing the ball to strike partner Steven Bruce, who smashed the ball home from close range.
The goal sparked Division One champions Globetown into life with leading scorer Peter Walsh just missing the target with a spectacular bicycle kick and defender Michael White hitting the crossbar with a glancing header.
With Globes pushing for the equaliser, Reddot almost doubled their advantage with a sweeping counter-attack. But with the goal at his mercy, Bruce failed to make the chance count as he blazed over to leave the game on a knife-edge at half time.
Globetown dominated the second half as they battled to retain their trophy.
But Reddot trio James Ricketts, John Yates and man of the match John Donovan were in outstanding form as they kept Globe attackers John Embery, Paul Dunne and the impressive Danny Carson at bay.
With the players tiring in the intense afternoon heat, the Dot’s suffered a major setback when player manager Micky Dowsett was denied the chance to join in the action when a mix-up with the match officials saw his name missed off the substitute list.
But Reddot quickly recovered from the disappointment of seeing their captain restricted to the sidelines when Jon Dowsett added the finishing touches to a fantastic counter-attack to score a crucial second for the Dots.
Globes refused to give up, and finally got the goal their dominance deserved when Paul Dunne headed home a lifeline.
In a frantic finale, Globetown went agonisingly close to pulling the scores level when Walsh unleashed the shot of the match with a rasping 25-yard drive, only to be denied by a spectacular save from Reddot keeper James Self.
