Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 3 May 2007
Local beauty ruined
• I LIVE in Holsworthy Square. One of the jewels here was a huge, beautiful jasmine ‘hedge’ which gladdened the heart with its hundreds of buds and ravishing scent. It had taken 18 years to grow to such awesome proportions outside the proud owner’s flat.
St Pancras Housing Association’s painters arrived one morning last week. The owner had already discussed how her jasmine could be lifted and propped up carefully while the railings beneath were painted. Alas, she had popped when the painters happened to knock at her door.
A short while and a pair of cutters later, she returned to find that the painters had severed main stems, effectively destroying most of the jasmine. Eighteen years growth and a wonder of nature swept away. Why? To paint a railing pronto!
“Well, don’t you want your railings painted?” said the person in charge.
St Pancras Housing has a history of hiring dreadful firms to work on its properties, but such vandalism is inexcusable. NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED
