Give councillors credit where due
•WHEN candidates stand for election, most have a hope that they can make a significant change for the better. But too often we, the electorate, are cynical about their motivations. But as Rose Harte highlighted (Bill was a hero, April 19) we are fortunate that Bill Budd voted with his colleagues to stop the planned closure of three libraries.
At the time the council argued that there was no option but closure. It was all but implemented when the vote stopped it. Now just a few years later, the value of libraries in our communities has become more appreciated. Almost all candidates standing in the last council election advocated the benefit of having libraries close to the residents of Camden. Bill and his colleagues have made a lasting difference.
There may be times when we should be wary of the actions of councillors. But for the most part, they spend many hours attending meetings on our behalf, in the hope of making a real difference. Perhaps we, for our part, should be more willing to recognise when our elected representatives deserve credit. G WILLIAMS , NW3
