Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 10 May 2007
Chaos at lunchtime
• SWAIN’S Lane in Highgate is a nightmare for shopkeepers, shoppers and pedestrians each weekday lunchtime, due to the crowds of rude and intimidating children from schools in Highgate Road. They stand in large groups on the pavement, forcing pedestrians onto the road. They congregate outside the sandwich bar and Tesco, shouting, fighting and generally behaving badly. They are rude and abusive, particularly the girls, if asked to stand aside to enable people to walk through.
The police constable on duty is unable to control both sides of the road. It is frightening for the elderly, the infirm and for people with small children.
Why can’t the headteachers get together and stagger lunchbreaks or provide a monitoring system? It has become much worse since the Tesco store opened. S HURST
