Pool closure excuse
• IT'S a shame that Camden primary school children are missing out on their swimming lessons (Pool closure leaves pupils high and dry.
The fault lies with Camden council for rushing headlong into the closure of Prince of Wales swimming baths, months if not years before the renovation work there can start.
They did so on the basis of a hole-in-corner health and safety report which has never been released to the public, without stopping to think whether temporary solutions could enable the baths to stay open – strong nets or canvas could have been suspended below the ceilings to catch anything that might fall.
All they wanted was an excuse to close the pool. They received the report on a Monday morning and closed the pool at 3 o’clock the same day.
The result is that for some pupils, primary schools are having to cancel swimming. RODERICK ALLISON
