Post office problems
• GENE Adams (Letters, ‘Late delivering new post office’, May 10) misunderstands what is needed to re-open a Post Office in Belsize Park.
The vast majority of branches – 97 per cent of the network in fact – are run on an agency/ franchise basis by subpostmasters.
Premises are owned or leased by the subpostmaster, running their own business, and not by Post Office Ltd.
This is, and always has been, the case with the vast majority of the network.
A new branch depends on finding the right person who has both a viable business plan and suitable premises. Post Office Ltd is not in a position to secure vacant premises itself.
Our position has not changed. We have consistently said that we would like to re-open a branch in Belsize Park following the temporary closure of the branch there.
But it needs the right person with both a viable business plan and suitable premises to come forward. JAMES TAYLOR
