Health centre sold for £2m
THE former Jamestown Mental Health Centre in Swiss Cottage has been sold at auction for just under £2 million to a pair of mysterious property developers.
Camden Council, which faced high court action when it announced the closure of the detached Victorian building in Adelaide Road, will pocket around £1.9m from Tuesday’s sale.
Two men working together, who both refused to give their names, bought the building. They had been bidding for other houses at the auction held at the Bafta headquarters in Piccadilly, which was organised by Parkway-based estate agents Chris McHugh. As they signed the paperwork, one of the pair broke off from handing over a 10 per cent deposit to try and buy a four-storey home in Grafton Road, Kentish Town for around £600,000.
Leo McLaughlin, who used the centre for 13 years and worked on the campaign to save it, said he felt betrayed by the sale.
He said: “Given the cuts that are in the pipeline, this is just the thin end of the wedge. In opposition, the Tories and Lib Dems promised to save Jamestown, but they have stood by and allowed it to go.”
Other interested parties included Holloway-based property expert Joseph Constantinou, who manages a string of firms dealing in homes and hotels.
Another bidder, property speculator Donna Bernard, said she had hoped to use the building as a school.
Conservative councillor Martin Davies, the Executive member for Social Care, said: “We had been talking to charities up till the last minute to see if there people who could buy it. But by the end of the day, we were advised that the amount of money would not be enough.” |
