Suspects at large despite warrants
HUNDREDS of suspects are at large on Camden’s streets despite being wanted by the courts, police documents show.
There are 250 warrants out against criminals who live in Camden or have committed crimes in the borough, according to papers obtained by the New Journal under the Freedom of Information Act.
Reasons for issuing warrants include suspects breaking bail or failing to appear in court.
Camden police have reduced the number of outstanding results to within Home Office targets. Sergeant Jayne Senior, from Camden Police’s Warrants Unit said, “All efforts are made by the dedicated Warrants Team to apprehend these individuals. There will always be a core number of offenders who can be challenging to trace, usually because they may not claim benefits, pay tax or national insurance, have bank accounts, register to vote, or register an address where they know police will be able to trace them. As a result, many of these offenders can only be arrested on the outstanding warrant when they have come to police notice for other matters. However, the ‘turnaround’ of outstanding warrant subjects is frequently high.”
