Wanted: police volunteers
MEMBERS of the public need to volunteer to bail out police swamped by paperwork if they want their community officers to patrol the streets, the borough’s top policeman told shocked residents’ representatives last night (Wednesday).
Reacting to residents’ concerns that Safer Neighbourhood Teams – the six-strong community police units assigned to every ward – were being overwhelmed by emails and phone calls to the point where they were no longer hitting the streets, borough commander Chief Superintendent Mark Heath said: “The hard fact is that I haven’t got funding to give any administrative support to the Safer Neighbourhood team (SNT) sergeants. The only way is for volunteers to
help us out.”
The blunt admission will call into question the effectiveness of the much-vaunted SNTs, introduced in 2003 as beat cops to reclaim the streets.
