Pond Street nights
LICENSING chiefs late last night (Wednesday) agreed to let a nightclub open in Pond Street, Hampstead. In an enclave of businesses and homes along the terraced Street, landlord Geraldine Canty won the right to open Icons – a coffee shop upstairs during the day, and a dancefloor with a DJ downstairs at night.
Neighbours convinced councillors to cut back the hours of the club from midnight to 11pm, at which point the decks must be switched off and the chairs pulled out for a further, quieter hour of drinking.
Fears that a garden terrace would be used until late by smokers were stubbed out by the panel, who ruled it should close at 8pm – the same time as the upstairs café.
Speaking to Mrs Canty outside the meeting, musician neighbour David Bradnum said: “It ends up we’re all happy – hopefully we’ll all enjoy your tea-room and get bopping downstairs.”
