Wanted window cleaner’s car seized over 70 parking tickets
A MOBILE window cleaner – one of the borough’s most persistent parking offenders – has had his car seized after racking up more than 70 penalty notices over 15 months. Bailiffs, officers from Camden’s Parking Service and police eventually caught up with the red Peugeot saloon in Clerkenwell last Friday, where it was clamped and removed.
The car’s owner, who is yet to be traced, owed more than £8,000 in unpaid fines.
He was wanted in more than 200 cases lodged with bailiffs by other councils.
The vehicle was fraudulently registered to two separate addresses, where the occupiers had no knowledge of either the car or the
owner.
Environment chief councillor Mike Greene said: “We have made a number of changes to parking policy to make sure residents get a fairer deal on parking, but we will be tough on the minority of worst offenders. “Persistent offenders will often have a connection to other crimes including driving without insurance or road tax and displaying fake or stolen blue badges. “It’s important that we take a tough approach to those offenders who think they can get away with breaking the rules and recover their unpaid fines.”
A Town Hall spokeswoman said: “Clamping is only used for the most persistent evaders and Camden Council continues to search for these parking offenders. “The council has been using new technology, such as parking attendants’ handheld computers, to help successfully track down more persistent evaders.”
