Camden New Journal - Letters to the Editor

Cycle fines were the big news of the week

• The startling news last week that four cyclists had been fined up to £550 each at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court for breaking Hampstead Heath bye-laws was followed by surprise that such a ground-breaking story had been tucked away in News in brief and given only two paragraphs.
It must be coincidence that in the May 11 issue, after the Camden local elections but before the cabinet had been announced, that reader RW called, “for God’s sake!” for all Camden councillors and all ranks of the police, amongst others, to do something about increasingly aggressive pavement cyclists.
Now, with the new brooms in place, and with or without the co-operation of the opposition, a change can be brought about to rectify the lamentable omission of enforcement of existing bye-laws by simple actions and with near guaranteed beneficial results as the Heath police have demonstrated.
Magistrates elsewhere will have noted the development and it is hoped will do their stuff after the Metropolitan Police have done theirs to bring these cocky, selfish wretches to book.
Enough is enough!
