Murder trial date decision awaited
A DECISION will be made next week on whether the trial of a man accused of murdering Richard Whelan, from Kentish Town, on a bus should go ahead as planned.
Doctors at Broadmoor maximum security hospital in Berkshire are still assessing the mental condition of the accused, Anthony Leon Joseph, and are preparing reports on his fitness for trial.
Old Bailey judge Gerald Gordon recently expressed his “great concern” that the case could be delayed for six months.
He said: “I’ve obviously got to have in mind the witnesses and the relatives who have gone through a tremendously traumatic experience already.”
A “progress update” on Joseph’s condition will be given to Judge Gordon on June 9.
At present, Joseph’s trial is due to begin on June 26. He is accused of stabbing Mr Whelan, 28, of Gaisford Street, to death on a No 43 bus in Holloway on July 29 last year after a row over chips being thrown.
Joseph, 21, of Theseus Walk, Islington, was arrested four days after the killing. |
