Church lectures aim to get us to talk and think
FERTILITY treatment, global warming, how literature has changed the world and what the future holds for human rights are among topics to be discussed in coming weeks at a Primrose Hill church.
As well as airing controversial issues, the lectures will raise cash towards building a community centre at St Mary’s Church.
The church’s third annual summer season of lectures starts on Wednesday. Speakers lined up include fertility specialist and ethics commentator Professor Robert Winston, author Melvyn Bragg, who lives in Hampstead, Greenpeace director Stephen Tindale and human rights campaigner Helen Bamber.
Parish administrator Jack Target said the lecture series was based on non-religious themes but covered topics relevant to Christian thought.
He said: “They are secular but relevant. These are big issues to talk about and we have managed to persuade a number of great speakers to take part.”
Organiser Rachel Glaister said the main aim was to get well-known faces to help stimulate debate. She added: “The aim is to get people to talk and think about big topics.”
The money raised will go towards the third stage of a £1-million renovation at the Elsworthy Road church that has seen its roof replaced and a community centre added.
