Police out in force after 'assault' on officer at tube
POLICE raced through the streets of Camden Town on Tuesday after receiving an emergency call that an officer had been assaulted.
Up to 10 police officers were seen sprinting along Camden Road on Tuesday morning in the direction of Camden Town Tube station after a colleague activated a distress signal.
A 39-year-old man – who appeared to be dressed as a woman – was arrested after he allegedly scratched the officer on the hand and set off an emergency alarm on the platform, according to police.
A spokesman for British Transport Police, the police division who deal with crime on railways and the Tube, said: “Assaulting an officer is a very serious offence – that is why it initiated a very large response.”
Onlookers were surprised at the number of officers called out to arrest what, in the confusion, appeared to be an unarmed female pensioner.
But police insisted that the BTP headquarters in Camden Road, which are a two-minute walk from Camden Town Tube station, are not on red alert to distress calls in the area. “It was an emergency alarm activated by an officer – any officer in the area would respond,” the spokesman added. “The injuries were minor, which is good, but that is the standard response when an officer activates the alarm.”
