We’re going for Olympic Gold!

SPORT stars of the future got the chance to meet their heroes on Saturday when Olympic swimmers and top athletes launched a free scheme at Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre.
Summer of Sport gives Londoners the chance to try a string of different sports for free in a bid to get more people involved in activities in the run-up to the 2012 Olympic Games.
And to launch the London-wide scheme, hotshots from Camden Swiss Cottage Swimming Club, Camden Basketball Club and Camden Gymnastics Club showed off their skills to an audience featuring London Mayor Ken Livingstone, Islington-based Paralympic swimmer Giles Long, Olympic swimmer Mark Foster and British athlete Marilyn Okoro.
Last year, 50,000 Londoners took part in events across the Capital, ranging from football to wind surfing and even ice hockey. Organisers are hoping that even more youngsters will join in the action between now and September.
Ken Livingstone said: “The key thing is to encourage as many as possible to carry on in the years to follow.”
On Saturday, sports stars from across Camden and Islington got the chance to try their hands at climbing, gymnastics, African dance, power pump, yoga, swimming, mini polo and kickboxing as part of the launch.
The borough’s Under-12s age group footballers also showed off their skills at a Joga Bonita competition organised by the Winchester Project on the outdoor pitch.
The Brazilian style game pits teams of three against each other for three-minute rounds, with no corners, goalkeepers, goal-kicks or throw-ins.
Leading the way ahead of eight girls’ teams on the day were Hampstead ‘A’ who beat their ‘B’ team 4-0 to win the girls’ trophy.
Meanwhile Soul II Soul star Jazzie B coached his Prime Soccer ‘B’ team to victory ahead of 12 boys’ teams. The Winchester Project’s Ibrahim Abdul-Razak was named most sporting player of the tourney.
