Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published:14 June 2007

Harry, hugged by Heather Mills McCartney
Rich and famous walk past charity collectors

• LAST Saturday was Animal Day, which comes but once a year when animal welfare charities combine for a joint flag day. I stood in Hampstead High Street outside Boots for six-and-a-half hours with a collecting tin for Wood Green Animal Shelters.
This wonderful charity not only re-homes everything from goats to greyhounds but helps people, too, taking care of their pets while they’re in hospital or whatever. Animals provide much-needed company for the old and lonely.
It was a particularly sad day for me as I had had to have my very own beloved greyhound, Harry, put down only the previous day.
We rescued him from Spain, where he was about to be strung up in an olive grove with wire and he gave us much pleasure for six-and-a-half years. We made many new friends on the Heath and even got to chat to Macca and Heather when she stopped dead in her tracks two years ago to give him a hug.
One would be forgiven for thinking that this affluent neighbourhood would be generous to our fellow creatures, experimented upon in laboratories, exploited in zoos and circuses, crammed into factory farms unable to move (often slaughtered inhumanely), trapped in the wild, abandoned, abused and neglected as our companions. Wrong!
Although the High Street was thronged with the rich and famous as well as kids in designer rags, iPods rammed into ears, thumbs twitching and texting, if one in 20 passers-by put something in my tin I was lucky.
What a selfish and sad world we live in!
