Centre for the disabled to close

A CENTRE for the severely disabled will close as planned in September despite objections from parents and guardians who are angry there was no consultation.
At Christmas an executive panel waved through plans to close the Kentish Town Project, a day centre in Ellen Terry Court, Clarence Way estate, which is used by 11 people with learning and mobility disabilities.
The centre is open every day and offers users the chance to have some control over their day.
Activist and parent Pat Pearce said of her disabled daughter Sophie: “They are put to the bottom of any list. This group of people are really overlooked.”
The Town Hall rubberstamped its closure after deciding the limited number of people using it could not justify the cost of running it.
Councillor Pat Callaghan claimed the Project would never have been shut under Labour’s reign.
She said: “(Councillor Martin) Davies (Camden’s health chief) keeps telling us that the previous Labour administration always brought it to the table.
“But we never sanctioned it – we felt it was such an important project.
“It’s not been fit for purpose for a number of years, but we continued to use it because we didn’t have any other resources.”
