Alf Masterson - has been inundated with visitors at the Royal Free Hospital
Rag man Alf battles on
MESSAGES of support have poured in for rag-and-bone man Alf Masterson following last week’s revelation in the New Journal that he has been diagnosed with cancer.
Alf, who is being treated at the Royal Free Hospital in Pond Street, has been inundated with visitors following the story – including a visit
from his daughter who he had not seen
for several years.
Swimmers from Highgate Ponds, where Alf usually spends his summers, and neighbours from his home in Kentish Town have also popped in to lend support.
Speaking from his hospital bed yesterday (Wednesday), he said: “I had 19 visitors on one day.
It was a bit tiring at times but nice to see everyone.”
Alf, one of London’s last old-fashioned “totters” has been doing his rounds in Camden – with handcart, bell and Jack Russell – for more than 50 years.
His customers include Alan Bennett, former Madness frontman Suggs and Joan Bakewell.
He will remain in the Royal Free while doctors review his treatment.
