Rainy day in Highgate, but festival goes down a storm
THUNDER claps and lightning flashes failed to dampen the spirits of visitors to the Camden New Journal-sponsored Highgate Festival at the weekend.
In spite of bursts of torrential rain, stallholders, performers and passers-by made the best of a soggy Saturday afternoon, buying, selling, dancing and singing their hearts out.
Organiser Katie Plews mopped up the stage in between acts, while daughter Racky joined performers to sing for the rain to go away.
At one point, performers even did an anti-rain dance with umbrellas.
Stallholders selling home-made cakes, decorative mirrors, bric-a-brac and old books were quick to act, protecting their wares with improvised canopies.
There was also plenty for the children to do with arts and crafts activities, rides, entertainment and some towering stiltwalkers.
Katie Plews, who is stepping down as festival organiser, said: “Highgate people were very stoical. Some of the stallholders gave up, which was a bit of a shame, but the people still came. Highgate ballet cancelled because the stage was too wet for them to dance but apart from that everyone carried on. It didn’t dampen our spirits too much.”
She added: “The numbers must have been down from if it had been a nice day, but there were still lots of people and when the rain eventually stopped there was a late resurgence.
“It’s the last year I’m organising it, but I’m not going away. I’ll probably still help with the performances.” |
