Organisations have to have leaders, so that someone is accountable
Jon Cruddas
If you mean a Leader of the Labour party, it is required so there can be a focus of decision making. In terms of a deputy leader of the Labour party I believe that we need a deputy leader who is 100% committed to rebuilding the Labour party. We have lost 200,000 members since 1997 and Labour lost nearly
5 million voters from 1997 to 2005, and there has been a collapse in our popular vote at the local elections - a further loss of 500 councillors in May when we had already reached a 30-year low. And while I would be in the Cabinet to ensure that members views were heard at the top of government if elected, I believe that because of the scale of the task ahead is such that I would not want to be Deputy Prime minister, or combine the role of Deputy Leader with a large departmental portfolio.
Peter Hain
We need a deputy leader to reconnect with our grassroots and to act as a voice for the members in Cabinet
Harriet Harman
I assume you mean deputy leader! The post of deputy leader provides a link between the party and the leadership, which is particularly important when the party is in government. The next deputy leader will need to listen to the party. As a woman deputy leader I will ensure that the issues around families and children are bought to the heart of government.
Alan Johnson
The Leader will fulfill many important roles- especially being the Prime Minister! The Leader is the public face of the party, who directs our policy and political direction.
I believe that we need a Deputy Leader, too, to support the leader, to act as a link between the Party in governmnet and the members and Unions.
