We need to build a programme of dialogue and reconciliation between Sunni, Shia, and other groups in Iraq, led by the Iraqi Government, we need more of the security and policing of Iraq to be handed over to the Iraqis, and we need a massive programme of reconstruction and economic development to create jobs and wealth, so people in Iraq have a real stake and a better future. What we must not do is cut and run. Our troops must stay the course, for as long as the elected government in Iraq asks us to.
Jon Cruddas
I believe that we now need to focus on setting a timetable for the withdrawal of British troops; this will be the best thing for all Iraqi people. We need to internationalise the situation, with troops being placed under the control on the Security Council and neighbouring states involved,to allow the Iraqis themselves to reach a political settlement.
Peter Hain
We have a responsibility to rebuild Iraq and to ensure it has a stable and democratic future. Only by ending the current violence is it possible to ensure a better future for the people of Iraq
Harriet Harman
I voted for the war because I believed there were weapons of mass destruction. If I had known there were not weapons of mass destruction, I would not have voted for the war. However, we must look to the future. Tackling the plight of widows, post conflict is a global issue. The international community must always ensure that women are centrally involved in the discussions post conflict and planning for reconstruction. I will highlight the needs of widows and children and argue for them to be prioritised for assistance
Alan Johnson
I believe that we have got clear responsibilities to the people of Iraq and that we should support the Government, the Police and the Iraqi army to help establish a stable, plural society.
