More stick and less carrot will stop our unruly youths
• I agree with those who wrote in favour of Asbos (Anti-social behaviour orders) (Asbos are a good stick to have when the carrot of reason fails, June 15).
Life on our estate in the past few years has only been made bearable for elderly residents such as myself since the introduction of the threat of Asbos.
Those are only issued after months of warnings to the miscreants as a last resort. Asbos require a huge (welcome) involvement from the police and the close co-operation of the victims of troublemakers.
Asbos are by no mans a fast solution or a decision taken lightly by anyone concerned.

• Being a fervent liberal, I used to be totally against Asbos on human rights grounds.
Recently, however, anti-social kids have moved into our neighbourhood and are creating havoc. After suffering sleepless nights from all their noisy activities I have now been converted to the merit of issuing Asbos to such trouble makers.
It’s easy to preach tolerance when the problem is not on your own doorstep.

• Labour deserves praise for introducing Asbos in Camden.
However, during the time they ran the borough, Labour gave residents with one hand but took with the other.
They told teenagers to behave themselves when at the same time the council sold off their amenities at Swiss Cottage.
All in the name of a few fat cats making a killing with real estate and a Labour Councillor or two supporting dubious deals at our expense. What took place in and around Kentish town in recent months also contributed to the general dissatisfaction of local residents.
It is hard to have respect for Labour Councillors who wilfully and behind the scene negotiated for and allowed the encroachment of a chunk of their only local park at Talacre to a private developer.
Thank God residents in Camden finally put their foot down when Labour were threatening to make a deal at the Kentish Town Swimming Baths with yet another private developer.
Ask residents to behave themselves by all means. Threaten Asbo’s eviction or worse if needs be. But respect the needs of the community by not selling off the family silver.
What belongs to the public and should be sacred.
