Medal-mania for magic masters
MASTERS swimmers from Camden Swiss Cottage made a splash at the weekend when they won a staggering 63 medals in the County Championships in Enfield.
The super squad of 43 swim stars clinched an incredible 55 individual medals and eight relay medals as the club won the overall women’s team event and came second in the men’s competition.
Former Olympian Susan Halter and Elizabeth Braimbridge were among the top medal winners in the older section of the tournament, while Laura Hobbs, Emily Drew and Kirsty Melville put in a series of perfect pool performances at the younger end of the championships.
Sue Green, Fabiola Amara and Clare Butler Brown were also in fine form as they helped earn the club valuable points in their race to glory.
The impressive medal haul continued a magnificent run of success for the Camden Swiss Cottage Masters Team.
In their previous outing, the experienced swimmers showed off their skills in the Commonwealth Games pool at the British Masters Championships in Manchester.
Among the top performers was Calum McKinlay, who knocked almost 20 seconds off the British record to clinch gold in the 1500m freestyle. He also won the 400m freestyle, before claiming silver in his respective 100m and 200m freestyle events.
In the ladies competition Susan Halter was in unstoppable form as she won the 50m and 100m freestyle and the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke in the 80-84 age group.
Meanwhile competing in the 25-29 age group, Kyla Steenhart won a full set of medals in the breaststroke events, clinching gold in the 50m, silver in the 100m and bronze in the 200m.
Elsewhere Nari Lawrey clinched a deserved gold in the 1500m and a bronze in the 800m freestyle, while Chris Hopton took silver in the 400m and bronze in the 800m.
