Harriers hit a ten-year high

TOP athletes from Highgate Harriers were jumping for joy as they celebrated one of the club’s most successful weeks in 10 years.
There were triple celebrations as Highgate won their Southern League Division One match at Brighton. Simeon Williamson won the AAAs Under-23s 100m at Bedford and Ben Noad beat a field of 305 runners to win the Dulwich 5k road race.
In an amazing turnaround, Highgate stormed to victory in their Southern League meet at Whitdean Stadium on Saturday despite not having any specialist throwers in the match.
Harriers team manager Richard Priestley was invaluable in placing his men in every event to cover up the cracks in the field. Delighted with his team’s performance Priestley said: “We obtained 85 out of a possible 100 points on the track, the boys did really well.”
The Channel Islands were leading right up to the last few events.
But Highgate carved out victory as they picked up valuable points in the final moments of the competition. The 4x100m relay was one of the pivotal events, with a very young team of Marius Guei, Francis Asante, Eric Guei, and Dwain Broomfield clinching a magnificent victory in 45.5. Light footed Broomfield also finished second in the ‘A’ 100m and 200m events with respective times of 11.4 seconds and 23.4secs. 
Club mate Ron Smith ran second in the ‘B’ final in 23.6 seconds, before joining Atak Diing, Mathew Dore-Weeks and Pat Davis to win the final event of the afternoon with a victorious time of 3.27.4 in the 4x400m relay. 
There were also vital performances from Ryan McKinley and Henry Dodwell who finished first and second in their respective 3000m steeplechase events.
Elsewhere Pat Davis pulled away from the field to win the ‘A’ 800m, while talented junior Atak Diing was second in the ‘B’ race in 1:58.4. Diing also sealed a second place finish in the ‘B’ 400m. In the 110m hurdles ‘A’ string runner Ollie Barnett ran 16.6 for second place despite clouting a hurdle, while in the ‘B’ race American Mathew Dore-Weeks did a splendid personal best time of 15.6 to win.
In the first two track events of the day, Simon Child and Dore-Weeks got Highgate off to a perfect start when they won their respective 400m hurdles events.
The win on Saturday sealed a memorable week for the Harriers, which started with Ben Noad gaining a testing win in the Dulwich 5k road race.
Simeon Williamson secured his selection spot for the European Under-23s  Championships Hungary next month when he won the AAA’s 100m at Bedford on Saturday with a personal best of the season in 10.22.
