Camden New Journal - by DAVID ST GEORGE

Son faces charge of killing mother

A SON accused of murdering his pensioner mother at their home made his first Old Bailey appearance this week.
At the hearing, Judge Christopher Moss, QC, demanded urgent action when he learned that vital reports on Charles Wright’s mental state had been delayed because of a wrangle over costs.
Judge Moss was told that unemployed Wright, 37, of Harmood Street, Chalk Farm, had recently been transferred from prison under a Mental Health Act order, to Chase Farm psychiatric hospital in Enfield.
He was arrested on March 16 when he walked into Kentish Town police station and allegedly confessed to killing his 71-year-old mother, Maria. She suffered multiple injuries in the bedroom of the terraced house she shared with her son.
Mrs Wright, a keen gardener who had two daughters, was discovered by police who went to the address.
Hugh Mullan, defending, said there was “a great deal” of work to be done on the case and much material still to be examined, including fingerprint and CCTV film evidence.
Mr Mullan told the court a psychiatric report had still not been obtained by the defence team due to problems over which health authority should carry the cost.
Judge Moss said: “This is a case which cries out for psychiatric reports. It’s vital that funding ought to be granted as soon as possible.”
The case was adjourned until September 1 for a progress report, with the possibility of a trial date in mid-November. Wright spoke only to confirm his identity.
Mrs Wright worked for the John Lewis store in Oxford Street for many years.
Neighbours remember her as “cheerful and friendly” but a private person.
