Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 5 July 2007
Let’s have an American-style yellow bus
• IN all the recent furore regarding schools’ locations, and the heated discussions regarding parking permits, should not Building Schools for the Future also be looking ahead to new transport suggestions for its schools? The Yellow School Bus, as run nationally in the US, is a (positive) law unto itself. Driver’s are penalised if they even so much as think about overtaking, barging in front of a bus or
overtaking when children are alighting – even on pavement side. The bus drivers receive strict training and even the colour of the buses themselves gives off a friendly ‘don’t mess with me or the parents’ vibe. Surely it is an opportunity for “benefactors” to step forward and sponsor both the development, and running of some fuel-friendly yellow school buses (with a little bit of friendly logo sponsorship, they’d be queueing up), and therefore gradually make it unnecessary for any car to undertake a school run.
They could eventually be accepted as much as they are in the US, as an everyday part of school life. LYNNETTE KYME
