Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 5 July 2007

Selfishness rules on the Heath

•  WHILE some people fume about cycle paths on Hampstead Heath, the killing of baby swans highlights the selfishness of a small group of Heath users, (Murder most fowl?, June 21).
Whether or not it is proven that anglers killed the cygnet,
certain anglers have expressed contempt for the sensible policy of closing ponds to safeguard young birds during the nesting season.
This selfish and arrogant attitude should open up a debate about whether anglers really have any place on the Heath at all. I have
witnessed many times when the ponds are completely blocked by anglers, often using long poles which obstruct the paths to those walking near the ponds. I have even seen a child trip over a pole, perilously close to the pond’s edge.
Some anglers erect large tents which block access and spoil the pastoral peace of the Heath. I often come across discarded fishing line and hooks, a danger to children, dogs and wildlife.
Why should a small minority of Heath users be allowed to engage in behaviour that blocks access, dominates public space, poses dangers, and injures and maims wildlife? A fragile, environment like the Heath should be respected and protected by all.
If it is found that anglers killed the cygnet, there should be an immediate ban on fishing.
