I THINK Arsene Wenger wasted his money on Jose Reyes. There were not many people who rushed out and bought a Francis Jeffers replica shirt.
Igor Stepanovs was a bad buy. And the jury is still out on Big Phil Senderos, who fears an aerial battle with Didier Drogba like Tim Henman fears a game of tennis with any other player in the world.
Come to think of it, Senderos, the clumsy oaf that he can be, could probably beat Henman at tennis right now. I know I could.
In general, however, you have to trust Wenger in the transfer market.
If Arsene says Patrick Vieira will eventually turn into a world-beating midfielder, we must believe him.
If he says that out-of-sorts winger Thierry Henry can be transformed into the world’s best striker, we should take his word for it. If he says a man called Dudu, the only Brazilian from Croatia, can be an Arsenal superstar – who is to say he is wrong?
Nobody has ever heard of new signing Eduardo Da Silva (Dudu’s proper name) and he might not win Arsenal the title.
But wouldn’t you rather Arsene came up with another talent-spotting turn (the Henry, Vieira, Anelka, Toure, variety, not the Francis Jeffers type) than chase Darren Bent-foot around town?
It is genuinely shocking to see Spurs manager Martin Jol pay £17 million for Bent.
It’s not just because Thierry left for less, it’s because Bent just hasn’t done enough to prove he is worth such a financial gamble.
Jol showed he was shrewd in the transfer market when he bought Dimitri Berbatov last summer – but I can’t be the only one raising my eyebrows at Bent’s price tag.
If you are spending £17 million on a player, your fans should be getting excited about the signing, but I can’t think of a single Tottenham fan who is relishing the sight of Bent providing Jol with yet another excuse to leave Jermain Defoe on the bench.
In cockney speak, Jol has been well and truly mugged off. Arsene rarely makes such rash moves. The lack of movement can be frustrating. Summers go by and, as Chelsea spend £880 million on assembling a squad not good enough to win the league, you wish he would make a move.
But his patience usually pays off and, once again, it’s time to put your faith in him.
