Camden compete in record numbers
Sport stars turn out in force for London youth games
SPORTING stars from across the borough turned out in force over the weekend when they made their way to Crystal Palace for the finals of the London Youth Games.
Competing in a record 35 events, a host of top Camden teams battled for honours as they took part in a variety of sports, ranging from athletics to trampolining.
Among the highlights saw the junior fencing team clinch a deserved gold medal, before joining forces with the senior squad to win overall silver.
The boys’ artistic gym team of James Aberdeen, 12, Sebastian Rennie, 10, Jayden Kimpton, 11, and Agon Metranma, 12, were also among the big winners when they scooped bronze in their six-piece competition.
Elsewhere talented youngster Richard Shapland reached the winners’ podium when he finished third in the archery, while Tom Webb finished ninth in the junior diving competition despite only taking up the sport two months ago.
Camden also enjoyed a big turnout in the Mini-Youth Games, which took place in Crystal Palace on Thursday. Competing against 32 other London boroughs, Camden finished ninth in the football, 12th in the swimming, 21st in the sportshall athletics, 25th in the tag rugby and 29th in the basketball. Meanwhile both the netball and the hockey teams celebrated their highest placed finishes as they came 11th and 13th respectively.
