Let’s use ‘le Tour’ to boost cycling safety
• WHAT a fantastic boost for cycling! London put on a wonderful show last weekend hosting, for the first time ever, the start of Le Tour de France and what fun it was to watch.
It was an inspiring boost for leisure riders, for commuters and for our children to get on a bike – all of which is good for them and good for us all.
And the Olympics are coming Camden’s way in just five years when the racing cyclists will chase from Albany Street, up Highgate West Hill and round through Hampstead.
But probably the greatest breakthrough was our non-cycling Mayor Ken Livingstone’s obvious delirium at his coup.
Perhaps this will finally unlock a step-wise increase in TfL funding for making roads for cycling in London safer.
In Camden we’ve seen cycling increase more than elsewhere in London – doubling in five years.
We’re now at a tipping point where there’s safety in numbers CLLR PAUL BRAITHWAITE
