Traders given leaving date ahead of £12m Stables revamp
STALLHOLDERS in the iconic Stables Market in Camden Town have been given their marching orders as the bulldozers prepare to move in to start the £12 million revamp of the site.
Sixty businesses have been told to be out by August 28 so that work can begin on September 1. The plans to create a two-storey glass development to house boutique shops, restaurants, studios and exhibition space, and redevelop the Old Gin House and underground horse tunnels, were passed at a heated council meeting in October last year.
Market management met traders at the weekend where they explained the businesses could move into the new underground shopping mall when it is completed in January.
But many of the traders say they would rather leave the market for good than be squashed into smaller outlets.
One trader, who sells vintage clothing in the arches, said: “Many people have been here for years. Everyone feels in limbo. They think maybe they might hold out till Christmas because the other building is not complete. But it’s underground and they think it might not be noticed by the customers.”
Another stallholder said: “All our businesses are busy in the summer time, and then over Christmas. We need the Christmas trade.”
The market’s management was unavailable for comment.
