Timber yard blaze danger to toddlers
STAFF at a Kentish Town nursery were ordered to move toddlers away from windows when a timber yard went up in flames on Thursday.
Thick smoke engulfed the roads surrounding the blaze in Castle Mews, off Prince of Wales Road, sparking alarm among neighbours.
Smoke at the furniture storage yard, opposite Kentish Town West train station, was so bad that the flames were completely obscured.
Nina Patel, deputy manager at Bringing Up Baby nursery in Ryland Road, said: “There was loads of smoke. I could not see the bridge. We had to close all the windows.”
Ms Patel said firefighters were so concerned at the danger the smoke posed to young children in the nursery that they asked her to move them further indoors.
Rail service were disrupted and dozens of roads were closed.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. It is not thought to be suspicious.
David Fitzgerald, White watch manager at Kentish Town Fire Station, said: “Everything was alight. It was packed to the gills with wooden furniture.”
