April scorcher and downpours in May see a bumper floral display at the Highgate Horticultural Show
A SCORCHING April followed by a soggy May produced a bumper crop of flowers for this year’s Highgate Horticultural Society’s annual show.
The society’s chairman Alan Dallman said the summer’s combination of lots of rain and warm temperatures had helped flowers bloom.
Mr Dallman, who scooped three cups at Saturday’s event, said: “The show on the whole was a great success. We had a lot of very good quality entries.”
But life in the garden is not all rosy – roses, the English gardeners favourite, have suffered, according to Mr Dallman.
He said: “The recent heavy rain has meant roses were not in their prime in time for the Saturday afternoon event. It is a shame – we normally do well with them.”
