Swiss Cottage swimmers leave their Brighton peers in the shade
Senior team tackles seaside waves to scoop medal haul as juniors also strike gold
SWIMMERS from the Camden Swiss Cottage Masters team were riding high on the waves on Sunday when they took part in the annual Brighton pier-to-pier race.
Taking full advantage of the searing heat, the squad of 15 members from the club put on a series of perfect pool performances as they splashed their way to victory.
Among the star swimmers was Calum McKinlay, who raced home to take third place overall in the men’s category, and finish as the highest place male veteran.
Camden Swiss Cottage Masters’ men’s team went on to scoop one of the major team awards as Calum was joined at the finishing posts by teammates Aaron Boesma, Pete Jaggs, and Chris Bumby.
There were further celebrations when experienced swimmer and top coach Nuala Muir-Cochrane clinched top spot in the women’s category to be crowned fastest female and fastest female veteran on the day.
There were also special mentions for debutants Rose Marshall, Grazzi Dorado and Stephen Colinge, who were tackling the Brighton challenge for the first time, and backstrokers Barum Panachi and Dan Scheinmann, who also put in good swims.
Elsewhere Elizabeth Knowles, Andrew Brown and Lucy Francis also turned out to represent the Camden Swiss Cottage Masters’ team.
* TOP junior swimmers were also in action for Camden Swiss Cottage over the weekend when a squad of 37 members from the club travelled to Southampton for the Fareham Nomads Summer Open Meet.
Triumphant trio Alex Peake and Laura and Jessica Hobbs, who all won the top overall swimmer awards in their respective age categories, were among the best performers as they battled against rivals from as far a field as Cambridge to Cardiff.
Alex was in sensational form as he swam 10 events in two days, setting an incredible 10 new personal bests along the way. The talented 11-year-old won four gold medals as he touched home first in the 50m and 100m breaststroke, the 50m freestyle and the 50m fly. Alex also finished second in the 200m individual medley and third in the 50m backstroke.
Club-mate Jessica Hobbs also swam the maximum 10 events, winnings three golds in the 50m and 100m backstroke and the 200m individual medley. Jessica, 13, also finished second in the 50m backstroke as she recorded no fewer than seven personal bests.
There was also a hat-trick of gold medals for Laura Hobbs, who won the 50m and 100m backstroke and the 100m breaststroke. The speedy 19-year-old also took second place in the 200m individual medley and third spot in the 50m breaststroke and the 50m freestyle.
Elsewhere Callum McDougall, Katie Hogben, Eugene Potter, Naomi Wakeham-Aredes, Liam Coyle, Ed Graham, Emily Drew, Metin Ayhan, Roseanna Cruickshank-Hull, Lucas Perry-Hill, Ayla Jaggs and Clara Ahmed also all put in impressive performances for Camden Swiss Cottage Swimming Club.
