Euro-champ Simeon smashes record
SPEEDY Simeon Williamson rewrote the record books on Friday when he posted a lifetime best to capture gold in the 100m at the European Under-23s Championships, which were held in Debrecen, Hungary.
The high-flying Highgate Harrier, left, who lives in King’s Cross, set a new Championship record when he powered his way to victory in a time of 10.10 seconds.
Under the guidance of coach Lloyd Cowan, Williamson overcame a false start to beat a competitive field, which included rival Craig Pickering, one of the brightest young sprinters in the country.
Highgate Harriers’ Press Secretary Alastair Aitken is confident that Simeon will continue to take the athletics world by storm: “Williamson ran brilliantly from the very start in Debrecen and subject to injuries, must have an excellent chance of being in line, as one of those to look out for, for selection for the Olympic Games in Beijing next year”
Meanwhile a depleted Highgate team showed great resilience on Saturday when they turned out for their Southern League Division One meet at Kingsmeadow in Kingston.
Despite the absence of eight of their distance runners and two specialist throwers, the Harriers still managed to achieve over 100 points thanks to some clever positioning by team manager Richard Priestley.
Among the highlights in the ‘A’ team events for Highgate saw Simon Child win the triple jump with a distance of 12.70, before going on to finish second in the 400m hurdles with a personal best time of 54.8 seconds. Child then joined forces with club mates Daniel Lavipour, Atak Diing and Pat Davis to win the 4x400m relay.
Highgate also gained maximum points in the 800m, where Davis won the ‘A’ race in 1.57.4 and Diing won the ‘B’ competition in just over two minutes.
Maximum points for Heathside sprinters
LONDON Heathside dominated the track in their penultimate match in the men’s Southern League on Saturday to take second place on the winners’ podium.
The club’s top sprinters gained maximum points in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 4x100m races as Heathside finished just 17 points behind overall winners Bexley.
Among the highlights for Heathside saw Moses Arthur and Jean-Paul Hazeley win both their respective 100m and 200m events, while Mark Perry and Majid Noori both ran to victory in their 400m competitions.
Moses, Mark, Majid and Billy Awere then joined forces to lead London Heathside home in first place in the 4x100m relay with a combined time of 45.2 seconds.
Elsewhere Paul Lemmon claimed a testing victory in the 3000m steeplechase, while brothers Adam and Leon Zeniou both enjoyed success in the field, winning the shot putt ‘A’ event and the high jump ‘B’ competition respectively.
