Youth Games stars honoured by Mayor at award ceremony

Event marks outstanding achievements of borough’s record-breaking athletes

SPORTING stars from across the borough were recognised for their efforts during this year’s London Youth Games at a special awards ceremony at the Talacre Sports Centre.
Youngsters turned out in force to celebrate their achievements in the finals of the London-wide competition, which saw Camden compete in a record 35 events ranging from athletics to trampolining.
The Camden team were jumping for joy as they were presented with special trophies by Mayor Councillor Dawn Somper and Camden Council’s executive member for culture and sport, Flick Rea, at the sports centre in Kentish Town.
The biggest winners of the day were the fencing team of Alex Tofalides, Beng Kim-Siew, Billie Beckett, Grace Jenkins, Daisy and Hattie Mann-Peet, Felix Jackson and Saskia Bonschoten-Binet, who were presented with the Most Outstanding Overall Team Award after winning gold in the junior ranks before going on to clinch a team silver overall.
The artistic gym squad of James Aberdeen, Sebastian Rennie, Jayden Kimpton and Agon Metrama were honoured with the Most Outstanding Team Award after they won a deserved bronze medal in their testing six-piece competition in the main section of the games.
Gym star Agon, who goes to Quinton Kynaston School in St John’s Wood, accepted the accolade on behalf of the team despite breaking his leg two weeks ago when he fell off a swing.
There was also a special mention for the squash squad, who were presented with the Mayor’s Fair Play Award, while the hockey team won the Most Outstanding Team in the Mini Youth Games Award.
In the individual awards, Tom Webb, from Kentish Town, won the Most Outstanding Boy Award after finishing ninth in the diving event despite only eight weeks’ training, while Jayne Freeman, from Swiss Cottage School, won the Most Outstanding Girl Award for her efforts in the shot putt.
PE teacher Sian Ciesler, from Camden School for Girls, was given the Outstanding Team Management Award after the school helped provide youngsters for the netball, diving, fencing, rowing, table tennis, tennis, athletics, squash and basketball teams.
