Dean Bennett |
Heartbroken family's last farewell to Dean
THIS is the picture of Dean Bennett, captured waving goodbye as he leaves a party, which his heartbroken family have framed for his funeral today (Thursday).
Mr Bennett, 34, died two weeks ago after he fell from Casterbridge House in Abbey Road, West Hampstead. His tragic death came after 10 months of depression.
His father, Ray, 58, a retired postman, said of his son: “He was the best at everything he did.”
Tragedy struck on July 18 when Mr Bennett took the family dog Toby for a walk, and never came back. “It was the first time in five months he made me a cup of tea,” said his father. “When I heard him call for the dog, I thought ‘that sounds good’.”
His parents are unhappy he was allowed an unsupervised home visit within four days of being ‘sectioned’. They say he should have been kept at the Grove Centre, at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, for two weeks.
The Bennetts are considering making a complaint to Camden and Islington Mental Health and Social Care Trust, but they are also angry that Camden Council left scaffolding up at the tower block where there were two earlier deaths.
“My heart is broken,” his father said. “I’ve loved him so much. Ever since he was born I tried to make him the best at everything, so I wouldn’t tell him if he did something good. Now I regret I never told him how great he was.”
His son worked as a financial clerk at an audio-books company in West Hampstead before retraining as a crane driver when the company closed four years ago.
Dean’s younger sister Keely remembered her brother’s generosity. “If there was anything I needed he’d give it to me,” she said. “When I went to Las Vegas he gave me £500 and said ‘have a bet on me’. I could only afford to bet a fiver.”
His funeral service is today (Thursday) at St Martin’s Church in Vicar’s Road, Gospel Oak, at 12.30pm.
After his burial at East Finchley Cemetery at 2pm, friends and family will attend a wake at the Golden Lion pub in Royal College Street, Camden Town. |
