Teddy aims to lure Georgie the missing
pampered parrot

Owner seeks help from psychic in bid to find pet that fled from a life of luxury

Joyce Mearns is waving a small pink teddy on a string around her head on Hampstead Heath in an effort to attract the world’s most pampered parrot.
It has been eight months since the cheeky blue-fronted Amazon Georgie flew out of her house in Holloway, despite having all the modern luxuries that money can buy, including his own bedroom with a stereo and TV.
“After our second son moved out, Georgie became like a surrogate child and took over his room,” said grandmother Joyce, 55.
“We gave him the run of the house. We really spoiled him.”
She said Georgie was a brilliant mimic and they had to be careful never to use foul language in front of him.
“He’d say, ‘Hello! How you been – all right?’ And when we got home he would shout: ‘Hello bubbies, where you been? Have you been a good boy?’”
Joyce is convinced that the four-year-old has made a new home elsewhere, possibly close to Highgate ponds.
And her view has been backed by a psychic called Candy, who told her that Georgie was flying around a tree struck down by lightning.
“Candy says that Georgie’s main problem is the crows,” said Joyce. “But she believes he is trying to find his way home.”
The psychic had asked Joyce if a pink teddy meant anything.
“I told her that it was Georgie’s teddy from when he was a baby,” said Joyce.
“She asked me to tie it on to a piece of string and fly it around my head when I’m on the Heath. She thought it might catch Georgie’s attention.”
Joyce, of North Road, has put up posters across the Heath and regularly receives calls from members of the public who think they may have spotted the parrot.
She has offered a £500 reward for the safe return of Georgie, who disappeared on January 8.
In the latest report Georgie was seen flying around Highgate Men’s Pond.
Joyce said: “I got a call from a man who said he heard a lot of squawking and saw what he thought was Georgie.
“The previous sighting was in May from a traffic warden who saw Georgie feeding in a garden at Hampstead Hill Gardens.”
Joyce searches the Heath as often as she can and says she is determined to continue.
“I’m sure Georgie can survive living on the Heath,” she said. “A lot of exotic birds make their home here these days.”
However, she is worried about another winter.
Joyce added: “He wouldn’t survive being outside if there was a really cold spell.”
Georgie has a yellow head with blue over his nose, and a yellow body with red, blue and yellow wings.
