Sylvester Stein
Still a champ in his golden years

HIGHGATE Harrier Sylvester Stein was crowned a British champion on Saturday at the tender age of 86 when he won gold at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.
Stein hit a time of 20.82 seconds to win the British Over-85s 100m title, running almost three seconds ahead of Frank Copping, who won the Over-80s event.
Stein modestly revealed after the race: “I am running well slower than a year ago but you decline in your speed as you get older, and suffer a few injuries too.”
Elsewhere, club mate Sigrid Hasler threw a personal best on Saturday when she finished second in the hammer with a distance of 32 metres in the Southern Women’s League.
Competing for the Metropolitan Police, Hasler also finished third in the discus when she covered a distance of 21.46m.

No rest for Heathside

IT was a quiet weekend for rival running club London Heathside as athletes across the country took a deserved break from competitions.
Among the club’s top performers in action was Mark Perry, who struck gold in British Championships in Birmingham when he won the men’s Veteran 40, 400m in 53.28secs.
Meanwhile teammate Ricardo Beckford also represented the club in style when he broke 15 seconds in the 110m hurdles to finish fifth in the UK Championships in Manchester.
There was also success for former Heathside member Jane Laws, who set a new British record on her way to winning the 5000m in the Veteran 50 category, before going on to also win gold in the 1500m.
Elsewhere Daniela Dueck was in fine form for Heathside when she won the long jump and finished second in the javelin at the Herne Hill Harriers’ Open Meet.
