Afghan hound to meet a greyhound
• ON June 14 you published my letter complaining that people were loath to part with their money while I was collecting in Hampstead High Street for Animal Day. I also mentioned that it was a particularly sad day for me because I had just had to have my beloved greyhound, Harry, put down only the previous day.
Your story (From an Afghan dog fight to a loving home, August 26) was on a happier note about the charity lunch we hosted for The Mayhew Animal Home, our very own local shelter, saying how generous people were, helping us to raise £1,843.
There was also a picture of Royal Marine Sergeant ‘Penny’ Farthing and myself holding up a big photograph of Nowzad, the dog Sgt Farthing rescued while on duty in Afghanistan.
The money will go towards Nowzad’s six months quarantine fees and he will be released on Christmas Eve and adopted by his Sgt Farthing and his wife through The Mayhew.
A month ago my husband Martin and I also adopted a dog released from quarantine. Harry’s successor, Percy, another greyhound, was found injured and caught in a fox trap in Spain where they’re used for hunting. At the end of the hunting season they are strung up with wire in the olive groves, thrown down dry wells or abandoned because their owners aren’t willing to feed them till the next season. Greyhounds in Need (www.greyhoundsinneed.co.uk) is a small charity which in the past 10 years has rescued over 5,000 of these exquisite animals. They don’t bite, they don’t bark, they don’t smell and they don’t fight. Dogs from heaven!
After Christmas we plan to introduce Nowzad and Percy to one another on Hampstead Heath. ANGELA HUMPHERY
